About JIPMER Karaikal

The second campus of JIPMER at Karaikal was established after receiving a notification from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, New Delhi. The Government of Puducherry provided 41 acres of land at Kovilpattu, Karaikal, for setting up the Academic Campus and Multi-Speciality Hospital, 38 acres of land at Kamaraj Salai for the Residential Campus, and PWD buildings at Arasalar Complex and ANM College building at Kovilpattu for the interim Academic campus. Additionally, MIG flats at Valatheru, Bharathiar Street, Karaikal, were rented to establish a student hostel. The first MBBS batch of 50 students joined JIPMER, Karaikal, in July 2016. The Arasalar Campus of JIPMER Karaikal was inaugurated on 15th December 2016 by Dr. Kiran Bedi, the Honorable Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry, and Shri V. Narayanaswamy, the Honorable Chief Minister of Pondicherry. The renovated Kalam complex was inaugurated on 29th March 2017. JIPMER has adopted the 506-bedded General Hospital (GH) of Puducherry Govt., located at Karaikal, for the clinical teaching and training of JIPMER, Karaikal students.

The 11th Standing Financial Committee of the JIPMER approved the 1st Phase of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) of JIPMER, Karaikal, to set up the academic campus, residential facilities, and new student hostels. On 25th February 2024, the 1st phase was completed and virtually inaugurated by the Honorable Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi. Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan, the Honorable Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry, and Shri N. Rangasamy, the Honorable Chief Minister of Puducherry, graced the inauguration function with their presence.
The academic campus encompasses 21 departments, including clinical, preclinical, and para-clinical, all equipped with well-stocked laboratories. Additionally, five lecture halls are furnished with audiovisual technology to provide an ideal learning environment. The campus also houses the administrative wing, library, and cafeteria. Notably, one of the lecture halls was designed as a smart lecture hall with state-of-the-art facilities for online and telemedicine classes.
