JIPMER Karaikal Department of Pharmacology and Forensic medicine successfully conducts three events to Raise Awareness Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking
The Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER), Karaikal Campus, successfully concluded three impactful events aimed at combating drug abuse and illicit trafficking. These initiatives, organized by the Departments of Pharmacology and Forensic Medicine & Toxicology, were held in observance of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. The central theme guiding these three events was “Breaking the Chains: Prevention, Treatment, and Recovery for All.”

The first of the three events, an Awareness Rally, was conducted on June 26, 2025. The rally served as a vibrant platform to initiate community engagement and raise public awareness on the pressing issue of drug abuse. It witnessed active participation from around 200 members including students, faculty, pharmacists, nurses, non teaching staff, reinforcing the collective responsibility in addressing this social challenge.

Video contest
Following the success of the rally, JIPMER Karaikal hosted video contest and comprehensive awareness programme titled “Fight Against Drug Abuse” on June 30, 2025, beginning at 2:30 PM. These event brought together distinguished speakers and stakeholders committed to the cause of drug abuse prevention and control.

Awareness Program on 30.6.2025
The event began with a welcome address by Dr. Priyadharsini RP, followed by a presentation by Mrs. Indhumathi S (Drug inspector, Department of drug control, Puducherry) on “The Role of Drug Control Organization in Fighting Drug Abuse,” in which shed light on the regulatory and surveillance mechanisms in place to curb drug-related offenses. Dr. Kusa Kumar Shaha, Dean , JIPMER Karaikal then delivered an insightful talk on “Awareness about Drug Abuse,” highlighting the health and societal consequences of substance misuse.
The programme was graced by Ms. MVNV Lakshmi Soujanya, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Karaikal, who attended as the Chief Guest. In her keynote session, she spoke on “Drug Abuse and its Preventive Aspects”, providing valuable insights into the role of law enforcement and community partnerships in tackling the issue.
At 3:40 PM, a video presentation was screened, showcasing awareness content created by students. This was followed by a prize distribution ceremony to recognize participants that creatively portrayed the dangers of drug abuse. The first prize was bagged by students from Anna college, second prize from JIPMER Karaikal and third prize from PAJANCO students. The formal proceedings concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Kumaran M at 4:00 PM. The event wrapped up with high tea at 4:05 PM.
These events collectively demonstrated JIPMER Karaikal’s strong commitment to promoting public health and fostering a drug-free society through education, community involvement, and inter-sectoral collaboration.
