The Department of Physiology, Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), Karaikal Campus, successfully celebrated the 12th International Day of Yoga on 21st June 2026. The celebration was conducted in accordance with this year’s global theme, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing”, highlighting the vital role of yoga in promoting physical, mental, and emotional well-being across all age groups.

The programme commenced at 09:30 AM with registration and pre-yoga health screening of participants. The formal inaugural session began at 10:00 AM with an invocation, followed by a warm welcome address delivered by Dr. Niraimathi M, Associate Professor, Department of Pathology. In her address, she emphasized yoga as a scientific and holistic approach that integrates the body, mind, and spirit and promotes a healthier lifestyle.

Dr. Sunil K. Narayan, Dean, JIPMER Karaikal, delivered an enlightening address on the “Importance of Yoga.” He highlighted the physiological benefits of regular yoga practice, including improvement in cardiovascular and respiratory functions, enhancement of flexibility and balance, reduction of stress and anxiety, and promotion of healthy ageing through better physical and mental resilience. He also announced the commencement of daily yoga activity in the academic block, mentored by trained yoga instructors and with the aid of standard yoga videos. The students, staff and faculty can avail this facility on a daily basis from 04:30 PM to 05.30 PM.

The programme was formally inaugurated and graced by the esteemed Chief Guest, Ms. Ishita Rathi, IAS, District Collector, Karaikal, who delivered a special address on the importance of adopting yoga as a way of life. She appreciated the efforts of JIPMER Karaikal in promoting preventive healthcare and community well-being and encouraged participants to incorporate yoga into their daily routines for achieving a healthier and more balanced life.

Mr.Balu, Deputy Collector, Karaikal graced the function with his presence. This was followed by the lamp lighting by the dignitaries (Ms. Ishita Rathi, IAS, District Collector, Karaikal, Dr. Sunil K Narayan, Dean, JIPMER Karaikal, Dr. Dhanalakshmi, an experienced Yoga Instructor from Karaikal, Dr. Divyashanthi, Registrar (Officiating), JIPMER Karaikal, Dr. Arul Kumar, Sub-Dean, JIPMER Karaikal)

The celebration witnessed enthusiastic participation from faculty members, residents, nursing officers, students, administrative staff, and other employees of JIPMER Karaikal. Following the inaugural session and group photograph, participants actively took part in the Common Yoga Protocol Session conducted by Dr. Dhanalakshmi, an experienced Yoga Instructor from Karaikal. The session included various yogic practices comprising loosening exercises, standing, sitting and prone postures, breathing techniques, and meditation practices designed to improve flexibility, concentration, and overall health. The occasion concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr.G.R.Sathya, Assistant Professor, Department of Physiology.

Post-yoga health screening was conducted to assess selected physiological parameters before and after the yoga session, thereby emphasizing the scientific basis and health benefits of yoga practice. Refreshments were subsequently served to all participants.

The programme was organized under the guidance of the Department of Physiology, JIPMER Karaikal. The organizing committee comprised Dr. Karthik M, Associate Professor and Officer In-Charge, Department of Physiology; Dr. Arunkumar B, Associate Professor, Department of Physiology; Dr. Niraimathi M, Associate Professor, Department of Pathology; and Dr. G.R. Sathya, Assistant Professor, Department of Physiology.

The successful conduct of the event was made possible through the dedicated support of the administration, faculty members, non-teaching staff, housekeeping personnel, security staff, IT Wing, Engineering Section, Central Stores, student volunteers, and all participants who contributed to making the celebration a grand success.

The International Day of Yoga celebration at JIPMER Karaikal reaffirmed the institution’s commitment towards promoting preventive healthcare, holistic wellness, and healthy ageing through the practice of yoga. The event concluded with a collective pledge to integrate yoga into daily life and to spread awareness about its immense benefits for individual and community health.
