Camp Report

A Cervical Cancer Screening Camp was organized on 15th October 2025 at the Urban Primary Health Centre (UPHC), Thirunagar, Karaikal, by the Department of Community Medicine, JIPMER Karaikal, in collaboration with the Departments of Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Pathology. The camp targeted adult women with the objective of promoting awareness and facilitating early detection of cervical cancer.

A total of 27 women attended the camp, of whom 23 underwent Pap smear testing. Pap smears were not taken in four participants, as one had been previously screened, two did not turn up for the procedure, and one was found to have active vaginal bleeding at the time of examination. Pap smear reports will be obtained and shared with the beneficiaries once processed.

Several abnormal clinical findings were identified during the screening, including vaginal candidiasis, bilateral para-ovarian cyst, a known case of carcinoma breast with bilateral modified radical mastectomy, endocervical growth, bilateral fibro-adenosis, inguinal hernia, and bilateral pitting edema. All patients with abnormal findings were counselled and referred to the concerned specialists for further evaluation and management. Those presenting with gynaecological complaints were provided prescriptions and initial treatment at the UPHC Thirunagar.

The camp was conducted by Dr. Karthik Balajee (Community Medicine), Dr. Nanthini Saravanan (Obstetrics & Gynaecology), Dr. Arun Kumar (Pathology), Dr. Avinash Kumar (Community Medicine), and Dr. Bitty Raghavan (Senior Resident, Community Medicine), assisted by interns Dr. Fathima Fida and Dr. Diya Ann Ashe, and supported by Mr. Jefin Joseph (Medical Social Worker).

The successful conduct of the camp was made possible with the active support and cooperation of the Medical Officer and staff of UPHC Thirunagar, who facilitated beneficiary mobilization and provided logistical assistance throughout the program.

The camp successfully provided essential screening and counselling services to women in the community. Following the success of this initiative, it was decided to organize regular cervical cancer screening camps to cover all women residing in the UPHC Thirunagar service area, ensuring sustained preventive and early detection efforts in the community.
