Patient care services 

The department of ENT provides patient care services in GGH Karaikal attached to ENT unit of GGH including outpatient, inpatient services, emergency and surgery.

General ENT OP : Daily 8:30 to 1pm

Endoscopy: Daily 10:30 to 1pm

Voice, airway and swallowing clinic : 10:30 to 1 pm every Wednesday.

Audiology services : Audiogram, Hearing Screening of Newborn, Speech therapy.

List of surgeries performed: Tonsillectomy, Adenoidectomy, Septoplasty, FESS, Tympanoplasty, Mastoidectomy, Stapedectomy, Thyroidectomy, Parotidectomy, CSF Leak repair, Endoscopic Medial maxillectomy, Microlaryngeal surgery.

Emergency care services include Neck trauma, Epistaxis, Stridor and Foreign body scenarios.

Department of General Surgery – Brief of Hospital Services

The Department of General Surgery provides comprehensive outpatient, inpatient, emergency, diagnostic, and surgical services covering a broad range of general surgical conditions. Services are delivered through regular OPD clinics, elective and emergency surgical care, endoscopic services, and operative facilities with both major and minor operating theaters.

Inpatient services:

The Department of Pediatrics provides comprehensive outpatient, inpatient, emergency, and critical care services for neonates and children at the Government General Hospital, Karaikal.

The department is equipped with neonatal and pediatric critical care facilities, including:

  1. Radiant warmers & Phototherapy units
  2. Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) support
  3. Non-invasive ventilation (NIV)
  4. Heated Humidified High-Flow Nasal Cannula (HHHFNC) therapy
  5. Invasive mechanical ventilation, including High-Frequency Oscillatory Ventilation (HFOV) services

ANAESTHESIA:

The Department of Anaesthesiology, JIPMER Karaikal, provides comprehensive perioperative anaesthesia care at GH Karaikal, working in close collaboration with the Department of Anaesthesia at GH Karaikal. Our team is committed to safe, evidence-based anaesthetic practice across surgical specialities, with round-the-clock availability for emergency and critical care needs.

Clinical services offered:

  • Preoperative Assessment Clinic — risk stratification, optimisation, and patient counselling
  • Obstetric anaesthesia — for elective and emergency caesarean sections
  • General and regional anaesthesia for laparoscopic, orthopaedic, arthroscopic, spine, endoscopic, and otolaryngology (ENT) surgeries
  • Monitored Anaesthesia Care (MAC) for ophthalmology services
  • Advanced airway management — awake fibreoptic intubation, supraglottic airway (LMA) techniques, and management of the anticipated and unanticipated difficult airway
  • Acute Pain Service — multimodal perioperative analgesia and maintenance of postoperative epidural infusions
  • Emergency trauma care and resuscitative stabilisation — 24×7 on-call anaesthetic cover for trauma, obstetric, and surgical emergenci

PULMONARY MEDICINE:

Comprehensive medical care, including both outpatient and inpatient services

Over 1000 OP’s per month and  30 – 40 IP’s per month.

Clinical services provided:

Tuberculosis-related services:

  1. Latent tuberculosis screening utilizing Cy-TB for above 5 years and Mantoux testing for below 5 years
  2. Implementation of TruNAAT with universal drug sensitivity testing for suspected pulmonary cases
  3. Routine HIV diagnostic screening for all presumptive tuberculosis cases
  4. Household contact evaluations, including preventive therapy for children and chest radiography for others
  5. Standard clinical care encompassing baseline assessments of baseline line blood glucose level, Hemoglobin, renal, and liver functions
  6. Therapeutic management for drug-sensitive and drug-resistant tuberculosis strains
  7. Establishment of the NTEP Core Committee at JIPMER, Karaikal

Management of additional respiratory conditions:

  1. Pulmonary function testing via spirometry for asthma, COPD, interstitial lung disease, and post-tuberculosis sequelae
  2. Diagnostic Bronchoscopy.
  3. Ultrasound-guided clinical procedures, including thoracentesis and fine-needle aspiration cytology of pulmonary lesions
  4. Intercostal tube drainage for management of pleural pathologies.

DERMATOLOGY

Hospital Services

The Department of Dermatology provides outpatient, inpatient, diagnostic, and procedural services covering a broad range of general dermatological conditions, pediatric dermatology, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and leprosy.

  • OPD acts as the Designated STI/RTI centre under NACO

DENTISTRY:

At present, the Department of Dentistry, JIPMER (Karaikal), is working actively with the Department of Dentistry, General Hospital, Karaikal. We treat patients with a wide variety of oral & maxillofacial conditions from facial trauma, secondary deformities of facial region, complex dental extractions, auto-transplantation of teeth, treatment of benign pathologies, cysts/tumor of the orofacial region, maxillofacial infections, benign pathology of jaws and temporomandibular disorders. We perform open-reduction and internal fixation of complex maxillofacial trauma and are providing treatment for TMJ problems through arthrocentesis and prolotherapy.

The department is involved in teaching programmes for MBBS students. The department faculty also provides support for integrated teaching with departments of ENT, Ophthalmology, Medicine, Pediatrics and Surgery for clinical teaching.

The department contributes to the community level oral health initiatives of GH, Karaikal and JIPMER, Karaikal.

In future, with establishment of hospital services at JIPMER, Karaikal, Department of Dentistry shall expand its services further to involve the whole spectrum of dental and maxillofacial surgical services, both elective and emergency.

At present the department performs around 60+ OT procedures and around 500 minor operative procedures in one year. The team attends to peripheral calls from other departments routinely and attends night duty & emergency calls for around 15 days per month.

COMMUNITY MEDICINE:

Health Centres (Training Linkages)

Since October 2025, the Department of Community Medicine, JIPMER Karaikal, has established academic and training linkages with an Urban Primary Health Centre (UHC) at Thirunagar and a Primary Health Centre (PHC) at T.R. Pattinam. These are Government health facilities functioning under the State Health Department. The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) is under process, with approval obtained from the District Administration. The department supports training of undergraduate students and interns through field-based learning, and posts Senior Residents, Medical Social Workers, and interns for academic and public health activities. The department has started screening for cervical cancer (papsmear) in collaboration with the dept of Obstetrics Gynecology and Dept of Pathology. Culture and sensitivity of specimens is initiated in collaboration with the Dept of Microbiology. Our department has actively participated in national health programs like Pulse Polio, TB Mukt Panchayat, World TB Day, Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week.

Urban Health Centre (UHC), Thirunagar: Serves a population of 9,144. Provides outpatient care, NCD clinic, antenatal care, well baby clinic, and adolescent health services. Laboratory services and free medicines are available.

Rural Health Centre (PHC), T.R. Pattinam: Serves a population of 21,280 through the main centre and subcentres. Provides outpatient and preventive services including NCD clinic, antenatal care, well baby clinic, adolescent health services, and Village Health and Nutrition Days.
