The department was established with its undergraduate teaching programmes (MBBS) from the academic year 2016-17 onwards. The department was established under the guidance of Senior Prof, former Dean of JIPMER Karaikal Dr. M.G Sridhar. The department is located at the  first floor of New academic campus, JIPMER Karaikal. At present, the department has 3 Associate Professors, and one technician.

The MBBS students are taught by module-based system-oriented learning in association with departments of Physiology, Anatomy and clinical departments. The department also participates in the Orientation programme specially designed for these students to strengthen the concepts of self-learning and lifelong learning.

Undergraduate

The Department provides training in Biochemistry to undergraduates for MBBS of the Institute. New methods of teaching like case-based learning modules, small group discussions, revision exercises like formulation of multiple-choice questions, open-book examinations, seminars and periodic examinations, just in time teaching were introduced for them to strengthen concepts in biochemistry. Major facets of the department are academic, research and diagnosis. Students are actively encouraged to do short-term students research projects funded by ICMR and other funding agencies which enables them to have research publications and makes them eligible for future international and national research and other academic opportunities. Students are motivated to participate in various quiz competitions at state and national level.

The department provides laboratory services in Government General Hospital, Karaikal.

The faculty and residents are actively involved in maintaining the quality control of the laboratory services.
