The Department of Anaesthesia is one of the first clinical departments to start in JIPMER, Karaikal, in February 2020. It began on 1st August 2020 by giving anaesthesia services for COVID-affected patients at General Hospital (GGH), Karaikal. The Department operates with guidance and coordination from the Department of Anaesthesiology, JIPMER, Puducherry. Anaesthesia services for elective and emergency surgical procedures performed in Obstetrics & Gynecology, General Surgery, ENT, Orthopedics, Ophthalmology, Maxillofacial surgery, and Pediatric surgery are provided in 4 operating rooms in the Maternity Block, General Hospital (GGH), Karaikal. Our department’s priority is to provide competent, evidence-based best practices and safe anaesthesia services.

The Department is involved in the Undergraduate Teaching program (MBBS) by providing lectures and clinical teaching on essential topics in Anaesthesia to the fifth-semester students.
The Department has the following future goals for academic activities:
- Starting of Postgraduate and Post-doctorate fellowship courses
- Development of Competency-based training programs for undergraduates and postgraduates with consolidated Entrustable Professional Activities.
- Provision of BLS/ACLS training
- Development of simulation pedagogy for teaching basic and advanced Anaesthesia related skills
