The department of ENT was established in JIPMER Karaikal in February 2020, and the department runs with guidance and coordination from the ENT department of JIPMER Puducherry. The department currently caters to the primary and secondary care of Otolaryngology services to the public of Karaikal and the neighboring districts of Tamilnadu. The department’s primary commitment lies in teaching, learning, and assessment programs for undergraduate medical students.

MBBS students in the 6th and 7th semesters participate in a comprehensive training program in the department of ENT that includes:
- Didactic Lectures:Year-round theoretical instruction to build foundational knowledge.
- Clinical Rotations:Eight-week practical training sessions in batches, providing hands-on experience in a clinical setting.
To evaluate student progress and continuous learning, a formative, internal, and summative assessment system is implemented:
- Notified Tests:Four scheduled examinations to assess theoretical knowledge and understanding.
- Clinical Examinations:Three clinical assessments are used to evaluate clinical skills and the application of knowledge.
These assessments collectively contribute to the final university examination, ensuring students are well-prepared for future medical careers.

The ENT outpatient department runs 6 days a week at Government General Hospital Karaikal along with ENT specialists in GGH Karaikal. ENT OPD is present at the First Floor OPD block of GGH Karaikal. The faculty and residents are involved in outpatient and inpatient care, elective surgery, and emergency on-call duty at GGH.
OPD Timings
Monday to Friday: 8:30 to 1 pm
Saturday: 8:30 -12 noon.
Average OP per day: 50 patients
Operation theatre day: Every Thursday, 8:00 am to 2:00 pm, 2-4 Major cases per OT day.
The commonly performed surgeries are tonsillectomy, adenoidectomy, septoplasty, functional endoscopic sinus surgery, tympanoplasty, and mastoidectomy. Other surgeries include microlaryngeal surgery, thyroidectomy, parotid and submandibular excision, thyroglossal cyst excision, and tracheostomy.

Department activities
- 2023 : Conducted screening camp for JIPMER Karaikal staff between 19 to 22 September 2023. An ENT consultant screened the patient, and the audiologist performed the audiological evaluation using Pure tone audiometry and screening OAE. Patients with potential problems were examined in detail.
- 2024 One day school health camp at Jawahar Navodaya school, Varichikudi Karaikal, on 23/03/2024, in which around 200 school children were screened for ear and hearing problems.
- JIPMER, Karaikal, conducted a two-day cadaveric endoscopic sinus dissection workshop, ‘OSTIUM 24’, on July 5-6, 2024—the event aimed to enhance FESS skills among ENT specialists. Participants underwent hands-on training, lectures, and demonstrations led by experts. The workshop featured maxillary, ethmoid, frontal, and sphenoid sinus dissections. A total of 18 participants, including ten dissectors, benefited from the program. The Departments of ENT and Anatomy organised the workshop under Dr Vignesh K, Dr Karthikeyan R, Dr Saranya R, and Dr Vijay Kishan B, respectively. Dr Kannaki S and Prof. Gunasekaran S graced the event.
- World voice day is observed every year on 16th April. This year the theme was to ‘Resonate, Educate and Celebrate’ voice. Prevalence of voice disorders among teachers is reported to be 49%. Hence, as an initiative, The Department of ENT, JIPMER, Karaikal, in collaboration with Avvaiyar Government College for Women (AGCW), Karaikal conducted a seminar cum workshop on CARE OF PROFESSIONAL VOICE for teaching faculty on 02nd April 2024, conference hall, AGCW between 2:30- 4:00 pm in view of World Voice Day. Apart from resource persons, three attendees from JIPMER and 25 attendees from AGCW attended the program. A pre-and post- online forms were documented to understand the need and effectiveness of the program. Active participation and interaction of all the attendees was gratifying, and because of this, it was an enriching experience. Heartfelt gratitude to Dean for his unwavering support. Thankful for the valuable contribution and hard work of organizing members from the Department of ENT, JIPMER, Karaikal and AGCW, Karaikal, for such a heartening involvement.
