General Info

The Department of Ophthalmology came to its inception on 24.04.20. Though the departmental activities entered a state of quiescence in 2020 owing to COVID-related issues, it picked up pace in 2021. The department handled the first batch of third-year MBBS students in January 2021, and the OPD services were initiated in collaboration with GH Karaikal. Ophthalmic surgeries were started in December 2021. Topical phacoemulsification and scleral fixation of intraocular lens, Phaco-trabeculectomy, Ptosis surgery, complicated cataract surgery and corneal tear repair were first-of-its-kind surgeries at Karaikal, benefitting the people of Karaikal, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Cuddalore and Tanjore districts.

1. Topical ciprofloxacin 0.3% versus topical moxifloxacin 0.5% as preoperative prophylaxis in cataract surgery- a double-blinded non-inferiority randomised controlled trial.
